Uncertain, Confused, Struggling, and more could be the words that define you right now and you try to mask it up with your smile and makeup but deep down, you are not well. We know the times are difficult and depressing; but you couldn’t have imagined it to be this much and all you can do is wallow in tears, thoughts and desperately seeking help.
Dear Ummah, difficult times will surely come whether we anticipate them or not but there’s a saying that “tough times don’t last but tough people do,” and it is often true. What we make out of difficulties can either mold or break us but we can choose the path we desire through Allah’s guidance and making the right decision to maintain your holistic wellbeing.
Wellbeing is not just a state of being that is unperturbed but a complete disposition and thorough positivity of the mind, body and soul. You can choose to be in a place of ease and calmness even while facing difficult times and it is a conscious effort. We often believe that our body, mind, soul respond to the situation and circumstances around us regardless of what we feel and think, but that is not a complete truth. The mind, body and soul responds to your feelings, thoughts and your choices. If you choose to be positive, and see a brighter picture regardless of how gloomy it is, your entire being responds positively. We must recognize that everything in our lives that the Almighty decides for us is perfect and balanced; therefore, we should never lose hope because of the hardships we face.
Maintaining wellbeing in difficult times can be an uphill task but it is achievable. Here are some quick tips to aid you in your journey:
- Make plenty of duas: For us as Muslims, duas are a big part of our life and it is a tool that can be used to feel relaxed and soothe the state of mind. You can find strength and guidance during difficult periods and through reciting some of the many beautiful duas and supplications, it eases the heart by putting faith in the words of Allah (S.W.T) and Allah (S.W.T) Himself.
- Create an Attitude of Gratitude: There is a strong association between gratitude and happiness. Gratitude can help us improve health outcomes, deal with adversity and build relationships. Developing a gratitude practice will help you connect with moments of joy and pleasure in your life. Some of the ways to cultivate gratitude are meditating on the words of the Quran, journaling, and expressing your appreciation of others.
- Acknowledge Your Emotions: Self-awareness is a key to identifying what you feel and how to intervene in dealing with the circumstances. Often times, it is easier and more comfortable to disassociate from negative emotions because no one wants to feel bad but acknowledging your emotions is the first step through tough times and a sign of strength.
- Physical Wellbeing It is important to remember that your physical and mental wellness are inextricably tied. They cannot exist without each other. In order to recharge during times of stress, activities which are essential to our livelihood should be a priority. Adequate sleep, physical activity and balanced eating are the foundations of physical wellbeing.
- Implement Positive Thinking: it’s important to practice positive thinking and change your mindset towards more optimism by remembering that everything happens by the will of Allah (S.W.T). As the Prophet (S.A.W) once said: Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good for him in every matter and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he is happy, then he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him, and if he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus it is good for him. (Hadith by Sahih Muslim)
- Do good deeds: When we find ourselves in times of difficulty, seeing acts of kindness around us can be a source of comfort. Lending a hand of help and doing good during rough times not only makes a difference for those in need but also gives a sense of accomplishment, which in return balms budding fears and anxiety within.
